World Continents and Maps

If you look at the world map, there are seven continents located around the world - North America, South America, Antarctica,Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Australia is the only content that is one single country. The continent with the most countries is Africa, which as 53 countries (47 mainland and six island countries) and makes up one-fourth of the entire number of countries located around the world. The largest continent is Asia, as it has over 17 million square miles. It is followed by, in descending order, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. Population wise, Asia, again, has the largest population, with more than four billion, followed by Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Australia, and then lastly Antarctica which actually does not have any permanent residents but around one-thousand researchers during the winter months and four-thousand in the summer months.

Asia covers one-third of the total land area around the world. It stretched from Japan to the Southeast Arabian Peninsula. The geographical composition is interesting as it contains the highest point in the world (Mount Everest) and the lowest point in the world (the Dead Sea). It is the only continent to be connected to more than one other continent, contains the biggest nation (China), and is the only continent where tigers live in the wild.

Africa covers 22 percent of the land area. Africa is home to the world's largest desert - the Sahara, as well as the longest river in the world, the Nile River. A majority of Africa is desert and divided into three distinct regions - the Northern Plateau, Central and Southern Plateau, and Eastern Highlands. Found around Africa are lush tropical forests, hilly plateaus, and swampy coastal regions. Most of the diamonds and gold in the world are found in Africa.

North America is approximately twice the full size of Europe. It is the only continent to be in both the Northern and Western Hemispheres. It is also home to the largest mountain in the world - Mount Kea, and the largest fresh water lake in the world - Lake Superior.

South America is home to the second largest mountain range in the world - the Andes, as well as the second largest river in the world - the Amazon. The continent is known for its diverse number of mineral resources, including lead, zinc, gold, silver, iron, and bauxite.

Antarctica is the only continent to be fully covered in ice. The only animals that can tolerate the cold climate on land are seals and penguins. It has a diverse marine life. Antarctica is the windiest, coldest, and driest continent. The average temperature is -50 Celsius. There is no native population and remain uninhabited aside from scientists and researchers.

Throughout history, Europe has been known to at one time in the history of the world, rule almost the entire world, land and sea. This continent is also known as where both World Wars commenced. Europe has a variety of mineral resources including petroleum, natural gas, coal, lead, and copper.

Australia, or as some call Oceania (encompassing Australia, New Zealand and Papau New Guinea) is known for having more sheep than actual people. The area is known for the vast wildlife and the Aborigines tribes. The world's largest coral reef is located in Australia - the Great Barrier Reef.
